Art

We have designed a history- and geography-rich curriculum that connects learning by building pupils’ understanding of ideas, concepts, chronology and themes through the framework of ‘here, there, then, now and next’. These thinking threads encourage pupils to be curious about the past and present, to learn from what has gone before, and to apply this knowledge courageously as they prepare for an ever-changing and exciting future.

As artists, pupils express ideas rooted in the here and now, drawing inspiration from artistic movements of then, and preparing to innovate creatively next. They are encouraged to be curious about a wide range of artists, cultures and styles, caring in their appreciation of others’ work, and courageous in taking creative risks and expressing their own ideas with confidence.

Our curriculum is structured and supported by a high-quality published scheme: Kapow Art. We have chosen this scheme to inspire creativity and to develop pupils’ cultural, spiritual and moral understanding. At Garras, we encourage all pupils to express their thoughts and emotions in a safe, respectful and caring environment. Art is embedded across the curriculum and provides a powerful medium through which pupils can explore ideas, develop self-expression and build the courage to share their thinking. Pupils are taught to reflect thoughtfully on their own work and to be caring and respectful when responding to the work of others.

Through Kapow Primary’s Art and Design scheme, pupils create a wide range of artwork while developing skills across key areas, including:

  • Drawing
  • Painting and mixed media
  • Sculpture and 3D
  • Craft and design

The Kapow Primary scheme follows a spiral curriculum model, with key skills and concepts revisited with increasing complexity. This approach allows pupils to build securely on prior learning, develop technical competence and remain curious and motivated as artists.

We take inspiration from a diverse range of artists, learning about their lives, contexts and styles, which pupils then apply to their own work. Art lessons are carefully sequenced and skills-based, using a wide range of media. Pupils are given meaningful opportunities to apply their artistic skills across the wider curriculum, ensuring learning is relevant, engaging and purposeful, while nurturing curious and courageous young artists.
