Geography

Aim: That pupils develop a strong sense of place and people

At Garras, we have designed an ambitious, history- and geography-rich curriculum that enables pupils to develop a secure understanding of key ideas, concepts, chronology and themes. Learning is carefully sequenced through the framework of ‘here, there and then, now, next’, allowing pupils to make meaningful connections across time and place. These thinking threads support pupils to learn from the past and present, while equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need for an ever-changing and exciting future.

Geography supports pupils in understanding the world here and now, learning from past environments then, and developing the tools needed to respond to global challenges next. Through this, pupils are encouraged to become caring geographers who understand the importance of environmental stewardship and their responsibility towards people, places and the planet.

Our Geography curriculum is structured and supported through the use of the Kapow Primary Geography scheme of work. This scheme has been carefully selected for its clear progression, strong subject knowledge and emphasis on enquiry. It inspires pupils to become curious and explorative thinkers with a broad and secure knowledge of the world, enabling them to think like geographers. The scheme fully aligns with the National Curriculum and supports pupils in meeting end of key stage attainment targets.

We want pupils to develop the confidence to question and observe places, collect, measure and record data in a range of ways, and analyse and present their findings. Through this, pupils build an understanding of how Geography shapes our lives at different scales and over time. Our curriculum aims to develop courageous learners who are confident to explore ideas, ask challenging questions and engage thoughtfully with local and global issues, preparing them to become active citizens who contribute positively to the world around them.

Our Geography curriculum promotes:

A strong and progressive focus on developing both geographical knowledge and skills

Critical and curious thinking, with pupils asking perceptive questions and analysing evidence

The development of fieldwork skills across all year groups

A deep knowledge of the local area and an understanding of how it differs from other regions of the world

A growing and confident use of geographical vocabulary

At Garras, we view Geography as much more than the learning of facts. It provides pupils with opportunities to develop enquiry skills, broaden their perspectives and become open-minded geographical explorers. First-hand experiences, including fieldwork, educational visits and visiting experts, play a vital role in supporting pupils to be caring, curious and courageous learners with a strong sense of place and people.
