French
Aim: That pupils can connect with people around the world.
We have designed a history and geography-rich curriculum that connects learning by building an understanding of ideas, concepts, chronology and themes through the framework of ‘here, there and then, now, next’. These thinking threads link learning meaningfully to create opportunities to learn from the past and present as well as equipping children for an ever-changing and exciting future.
In French, we communicate effectively here and now, drawing on the language’s cultural roots from then, and developing skills to engage globally next, fostering appreciation of different cultures.
At Garras, we follow the Kapow Primary French scheme of work which is designed with six strands that run throughout.
These are:
- Speaking and pronunciation
- Listening
- Reading and writing
- Grammar
- Intercultural understanding
- Language detective skills
Through Kapow Primary French scheme, pupils are given opportunities to communicate for practical purposes around familiar subjects and routines. The scheme provides balanced opportunities for communication in both spoken and written French, although in Year 3 the focus is on developing oral skills, before incorporating written French in Year 4 and beyond.
The Kapow Primary scheme is a spiral curriculum, with key skills and vocabulary revisited repeatedly with increasing complexity, allowing pupils to revise and build on their previous learning. Cross-curricular links are included throughout our French units, allowing children to make connections and apply their language skills to other areas of their learning.
We want pupils to develop the confidence to communicate in French for practical purposes, using both written and spoken French. We aim to give pupils a foundation for language learning that encourages and enables them to apply their skills to learning further languages, developing a strong understanding of the English language, facilitating future study and opening opportunities to study and work in other countries in the future.
Go Cornish – Skol Garros
Here at Skol Garros (Garras School), we are proud to have signed-up for the ‘Go Cornish’ award scheme.
We want everyone to enjoy their own sense of Cornishness and to feel part of our unique Cornish language. ‘Omlowenhe gans Kernewek!’ (“Have fun with Cornish”!)
As part of the Go Cornish programme, our children and staff are learning and celebrating the Cornish language and we are really proud to be working towards a Bronze Award. We have bilingual signs up around the school and try to use some Cornish each day. Our children in Year 2 and 3 learn to greet each other and enjoy stories, rhymes and songs in Cornish. The children learn to count to 10 and answer the register as well as learning please and thank you and other phrases within our daily routines.
