Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development
From the beginning of their time at Garras Community Primary School, pupils learn that they are unique and valued individuals. They are encouraged to be caring towards one another and the world around them, while developing a sense of awe and wonder about life. Opportunities to reflect, explore, learn and grow are woven through the curriculum and enriched through the arts, language, outdoor learning and educational visits, enabling pupils to develop confidence and the courage to express themselves and reflect on their own beliefs and values.
Moral
Pupils demonstrate a well-developed sense of right and wrong, underpinned by British Values and a strong respect for, and understanding of, other faiths and cultures. They are encouraged to be courageous in making ethical choices and standing up for what is right. Through structured discussion and debate, pupils develop curiosity about wider moral issues and learn to listen carefully and respectfully to the views of others, responding with empathy and care.
Social
Behaviour and the quality of relationships within our school are consistently positive; pupils are polite, behave well and demonstrate a caring attitude towards others. They show genuine consideration for the feelings of those around them and build respectful, trusting relationships. Pupils take their social responsibilities seriously and act as courageous advocates for others, engaging locally, nationally and internationally through charitable fundraising and child sponsorship. Their curiosity about the needs of others helps them to understand how they can make a positive difference in the wider world.
Cultural and Multi-Cultural
The provision to support pupils’ cultural development is broad and purposeful. Pupils extend their understanding of their own cultural heritage through studies of Cornish art, language and literature, fostering curiosity and pride in their local identity. Access to high-quality performance, theatre and the arts, including residential visits to London, broadens pupils’ cultural experiences and builds confidence and courage. Through the study of other faiths and cultures, pupils develop a caring, informed understanding of Britain as a diverse, multi-cultural society. Strong links with local churches – including Mawgan, Light and Life and the Lizard Fellowship – enhance this provision. Pupils know these communities well and visit them to study, present work and, at times, to worship.
